Quit smoking is cutting the risk of dying from heart disease
February is Heart Month for the awareness of heart disease and avoiding tobacco use and second-hand smoking should be top of your agenda. There are 4,000 toxins contained in the smoke from every cigarette. If you quit smoking you are cutting the risk of dying from heart disease by 50% and stopping smoking will also decrease the risk of developing high BP or suffering a stroke.
22,000 Americans die from heart disease as a result of other people’s smoke every year. The CDC states that since the rise of smoke free areas around the US, there has been a massive reduction in the number of heart attack sufferers being admitted into hospital. So the smoking bans are working but can we take it even further?
Smokers in Honduras may smoke at home if they wish but not if their families disapprove. Family members now have the right to file a complaint against their smoking family members. The smoker is then warned but for a second time offence, the smoker has to pay a fine of $311. Not a bad idea especially for the 30% of the Honduras population who smoke. Nine out of every ten people in Honduras, which suffer from acute bronchitis, live with a smoker.
Even our canine friends are suffering. Dogs that live in smoking homes have a much higher risk of developing cancer than those who live in non-smoking households. Along with cancer, they are at risk of lung infection and respiratory problems such as asthma.
Dogs that have longer snouts those others are at a heightened risk of developing nose cancer. Shorter snouts means shorter nasal passages indicating that less filtration takes place in the nose of the dog and therefore more second-hand smoke and chemicals are reaching the lungs.
Stopping smoking is a fete but smoking cessation aids are known to work such as Champix. This cessation aid has a 90% success rate for those who want to quit cold turkey. Champix can only be purchased with a prescription and can be obtained from the pharmacy.
With so much help and advice out there to ease the frustration that goes with trying to stop smoking, there is no excuse for overlooking the health of those around you who do not smoke but who suffer at the mercy of a smoking addict’s second-hand puffs.
